Sleep:
Sleep is imperative. Before you set out on your all night work session you need to make sure you sleep. When you sleep your brain can properly store the information that you learned earlier in the day. If you do not sleep you will have difficulty recalling things such as names or due dates. With a regular sleeping schedule you can better regulate your stress hormones, which means focusing on your work will no longer strain your energy. Working from home requires discipline and concentration unlike that required in a traditional office setting. Only with proper sleep
can you exert the discipline and focus needed to get your overnight bestseller written.
Why You Need Sleep
The brain cannot process the information you learned during the day while you are awake. You need to be asleep. The brain will also help work through emotional problems you are having as you dream and solidify your thoughts and memories. This is particularly important if you are writingâfor exampleâa novel wherein charactersâ struggles mirror those of your personal struggles and the only way for them to solve those issues is for you to get sleep and have your brain work through your issues to a point of resolution. You can incorporate the manner in which you resolved your issues into the novel and achieve great success.
New Study on Sleep
A new study by Jeff Iliff explains the importance of sleep:
âWe found that sleep may actually be a kind of elegant design solution to some of the brains most basic needs. [â¦1:53] The first problem that every organ must solve is the continuous supply of nutrients to fuel all the cells of the body. In the brain, that is especially critical. Its intense electrical activity uses up a quarter of the bodyâs entire energy supply (!) even though the brain accounts for only about 2% of the bodyâs mass. [â¦2:46] Now just as every cell requires nutrients to fuel it every cell also produces waste as a byproduct. And the clearance of the waste is the second basic problem that each organ has to solve.â[1]
If you donât get enough sleep, that waste will build up in your body and slow all your systems down. You need to make sure your body has enough time to clean up and refresh itself each night. Jeff Iliff explains this in even more detail:
âWhen the brain is awake and is at itâs most busy it puts off clearing away the waste from the spaces between its cells until later. And then when it goes to sleep and doesnât have to be as busy it shifts into a kind of cleaning
